Mike Smith
I've been in the sports media and broadcasting world since 2010 upon my graduation from the University of Kansas and currently serve as Sports Information Director at Dodge City Community College in Dodge City, KS taking over the position in August 2021.
In first year at Dodge City worked to enhance the coverage of all Conquistador athletics in several ways. I oversaw the live stream and served as play-by-play announcer for volleyball, men's and women's soccer, softball, and baseball, was in charge of all social media, updated and maintained www.goconqs.com, designed graphics and video content to promote athletes and teams, and more. I increased viewership of live stream in my first year, along with growing the Dodge City athletics social media platforms exponentially. Three months on to the job at Dodge City I was named CoSIDA Sports Information Director of the Month for October. Prior to joining the staff at Dodge City, I was the Sports Information Director at Pacific University in Oregon, where I oversaw all aspects of media for 22 varsity sports at Pacific. I updated and provide content for goboxers.com, while running the social media, produce graphics, and more to promote the student athletes and Boxer athletics. I worked to improve the live stream among other things to take Pacific athletics to another level and continue to enhance the student athlete experience and the promote of athletics at Pacific. I left the position to take a break from my career for mental health reasons, to reset my life and find a balance. Before Pacific I became the first ever SID at Highland Community College after starting to work for the college as play-by-play broadcaster. I served as the main media liaison for all Highland CC sports. I updated and maintained scottieathletics.com, developed live stream to one of the best in the KJCCC and NJCAA with multiple cameras, graphics & more, also developed other video content like "Scottie Sports Talk" and developed graphics, ran social media and more. Prior to becoming SID at Highland CC I spent around seven years with KNZA Inc working as a sports broadcaster for their cluster of radio stations. I did play-by-play broadcasts for high school football, girls and boys basketball, baseball, softball and volleyball, while also doing daily sportscast on the radio. My duties also branched into other aspects at the station, also with online work (run and post most of the content at www.mscsports.net - Northeast Kansas high school sports website for KNZA Inc), production work and more. My broadcasting/journalism experience includes work with radio, online editing/creating content, television work and more with my college education coming from the University of Kansas where I earned a Bachelor's degree in journalism. For my radio experience, I've done play-by-play for KU football, men's and women's basketball and baseball; hosted/co-hosted sports talk shows and pregame and halftime shows. Also he has attend and media days and press conferences getting interviews with coaches and players. While doing all that for the radio he also produces his sports talk show by running the board, booking guests and more, as well as helps other shows all on the University of Kansas student radio station 90.7 KJHK. After college I interned with Offense-Defense and helped them broadcast their youth football camps online and create promotional material for the camps. After summer internship I moved to Salem, Virginia and worked for Roanoke College as a freelance broadcaster, doing play-by-play and color commentary for of their sports while also helping produce a bi-weekly live Roanoke sports talk show. Upon my return to Kansas I did freelance play-by-play for the sports of soccer, softball and football working with 810varsity.com before joining the KNZA Inc company in November 2011. At KNZA I worked on multiple stations mainly 103.9 KNZA and 92.1 KMZA serving a Sports Director as my main duties. During my time with KNZA Inc, I had the privilege to cover some of the top high schools in Kansas, as I broadcasted/covered the sports of football, basketball, volleyball, baseball, softball, track and field, wrestling, tennis and cross country. My main job is anchor seven daily sports reports on KNZA and KMZA, as well as do play-by-play for football, basketball, volleyball, baseball and softball on both stations throughout the season. I continually grew the coverage of sports in KNZA, Inc during my time with the company. I broadcasted for several State Championship teams from my listening area during time my as a sports broadcaster with KNZA and KMZA, along with multiple other fourth place or better teams at State competitions. I was the main writer/editor for the stations sports website www.mscsports.net and one of the main writers for the stations annual football and basketball preview magazines for the Northeast Kansas area and more. While, I also served as a jack of all trades at the station also doing website work, an on-air shift, producing, voice over/production work, severe weather coverage, board operator, sales and more. I've been in the sports media business for over 10 years with plenty of experience gained in college, also.
